From Foundational IT to Client Focused Growth

As I reflect on my first six months with the team at 3Kites, I have had the opportunity to work closely with several firms on IT reviews, operating model discussions and forward-looking technology strategies. What has been most encouraging is how open firms are to honest conversations about risk, capability and what technology needs to enable next as they look toward 2026 and beyond.
A consistent theme across those reviews is the importance of strong foundational IT, reliable systems, protected data and well managed risk providing a stable and trusted platform for the firm. However, for firms looking to grow, integrate, or differentiate, foundational IT alone is no longer enough. As cloud, automation and AI become embedded in everyday legal delivery, IT increasingly sits at the heart of commercial and operational decision making. It is now expected to enable:
• More consistent and efficient service delivery
• Better use of insight, data and management information
• Scalable growth, integration and new ways of working
• Improved client experience, transparency and confidence
Just as important is the evolution of the IT team itself. The shift toward SaaS platforms and managed services changes the skills firms need with less focus on running infrastructure and more on vendor and service management, commercial awareness and strategic ownership of outcomes. It is also about recognising untapped talent within teams, developing individuals to think more commercially and aligning their contribution directly to the profitability and performance of the partnership.
The firms that succeed will be those that combine solid foundations with clear strategic direction, disciplined execution and strong leadership across technology, operations and people supported by trusted advisers and technology providers.
