Management Information and Reporting
Finance, CRM, HR and other systems hold a wealth of information which can assist in managing a professional service business. Lawyers at all levels are expected to manage the business from matters, to client relationships, to practice groups, offices and whole firms. Yet few professionals have the time, or the inclination, to wade through and interpret large amounts of data.
It is important to examine what information those at all levels require in order to manage the parts of the business for which they have responsibility. Consideration must also be given as to how that information can be provided in context to fee-earners to ensure effective management, without having to divert unnecessary time and attention from income generation. Addressing these issues requires an understanding of the way many lawyers work – as an example individuals may be undaunted by huge documents full of densely packed text, but be less inclined to spend time looking at pages of figures. The presentation of (only) the relevant information can make a huge difference, and such presentation needs to be adapted to focus on the key indicators that the individual manager can actually influence.
