Business Process Analysis
As technology develops it creates opportunities for improved efficiency and for generating more value, although the implementation of different new systems on top of older processes can result in greater complexity rather than efficiency. Sometimes it requires an end-to-end re-evaluation of the steps that have traditionally been followed to ensure that effort is not being wasted. For example, current systems may require the same information to be provided more than once, or to be fed in to different systems by different processes. However, it may be possible for this information to be more efficiently spread from its origin to the points where it is needed.
Our experience of dealing with business processes in law firms extends to the following areas, amongst others:
- Matter inception
- Building risk management and compliance processes into matter inception. Ensuring that such processes do not impede progress with the matter more than necessary.
- Taking the opportunity to collect and utilise business information as part of the inception process.
- Billing procedures
- Breaking down the steps required to issue a bill.
- Assessing whether processes can be improved by the provision of better information or by streamlining some of the steps.
- Focusing on how many separate times the lawyer has to review information before bill is finalised.
- Creation of marketing material.
- Addressing the processes for generating, approving and distributing marketing material.
- Assessing whether the investment of non-chargeable effort in these processes is providing the firm with maximum value.
- Provision of legal know how to clients.
- Ensuring that this is being provided in a way that delivers the maximum marketing benefit to the firm with the minimum internal burden.
